PAPAR: A man was killed and another injured when their pickup truck was rammed by an oncoming train at Kampung Mandahan here on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Jumar Talib, 50, the driver of the truck. His colleague, Akob Tamsi, 50, is receiving treatment at the district hospital.
The duo and two other colleagues at an electrical substation in Ulu Kimanis were on their way home when Jumar took a route across railway tracks at 4.29pm.
“He did not notice the incoming train from the direction of Papar.
“The train rammed the side of the vehicle, which was dragged for about 15 metres,” said District police chief Superintendent Ladamah Sulaiman.
Akob was in the front passenger seat and suffered serious injuries. The other two colleagues, seated in the back, managed to jump out of the vehicle before the train hit.
“Investigations revealed that the route taken by the driver is illegal, and there are no barricades,” said Ladamah, adding that police have classified the case as sudden death.
