PUTRAJAYA: Wisma Putra confirmed on Wednesday all Malaysians residing in Harare, Zimbabwe are currently safe amidst the increasingly tense political situation in the capital.
The ministry is closely monitoring the political and military developments there through the Embassy of Malaysia in Harare, it said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Malaysians intending to travel to Zimbabwe in the immediate future are advised to defer non-essential travel until further notice,” the statement read.
The ministry also said that Malaysian citizens who are already in Zimbabwe should contact the Embassy at +263 433 4413/4414, +263 77 500 1441 or through email at mwharare@kln.gov.my
“They could also contact the Foreign Ministry in Putrajaya at 03-8887 4587 (during office hour), 03-8887 4570 (after office hours) or through email at maisarahariffin@kln.gov.my to inform us of their location.
“They are advised to remain indoors and to avoid crowded places as well as night travel.”
Reuters reported earlier that Zimbabwe’s military had seized power in a targeted assault on ‘criminals’ around President Robert Mugabe who were causing social and economic suffering, but gave assurances the 93-year-old leader and his family were “safe and sound.”
Zimbabwean soldiers and armoured vehicles blocked roads to the main government offices, parliament and the courts in central Harare.
