KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Department of Environment says no new mud floods have been reported at the East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) site near Kampung Felcra Semungkis, Hulu Langat.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar in a statement said erosion damage and silt were found in the area, caused by heavy rainfall over the last few days.
“I have instructed the DoE director and the Minerals and Geoscience Department to conduct checks at the site. They have fully conducted checks at the site of the EKVE on Nov 30. JMG is currently checking the slopes and soil movement for landslide possibilities,” he said.
He said on Oct 24, Department of Environment director-general Datuk Dr Ahmad Kamarulnajuib Che Ibrahim has issued a stop work order under the Section 34AA(1)(b) and 34AA(2)(c) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
“The stop-work order was made after failure of EKVE contractors to conduct proper erosion and silt control at the site according to the 'Land Disturbing Pollution Prevention and Mitigation' guideline,” he said.
Wan Junaidi said the Selangor DOE has monitored the EKVE project on a weekly basis and found that there were no soil work or construction activities being conducted there since the stop work order.
“Only repair works for the erosion and silt control were allowed to be carried out. Apart from that, the EKVE has shown its commitment to improvising and upgrading the erosion and silt control as per the DoE's instructions,” he said in response to a report by TV9 on Nov 29 about the EKVE project.
He said the stop-work order will continue until the ministry is fully satisfied with the measures taken to fix the problems at the site, based on best management practices which recommended by the project developer.
On Nov 29, TV9 aired a report on the grouses of the residents of Kampung Felcra Semungkis about the mud flood at their village everytime it rains.
