ALOR STAR: The Tsunami memorial and gallery in Kota Kuala Muda, which was built in remembrance of the victims who lost their lives on Dec 24, 2004, will be upgraded to attract more tourists to the town.
Located in Kampung Permatang Katong, the gallery features haunting photographs of the disaster’s aftermath, which resulted in the loss of life and property.
Pantai Merdeka assemblyman Datuk Ali Yahya said since the gallery opened at the end of last year, hundreds of tourists have visited the gallery.
He also said the Sungai Petani Municipal Council, which manages the gallery, plans to further develop the area by opening eateries and erecting more tourist-friendly facilities.
He said so far, several eateries have been opened at the gallery to attract more visitors.
“The development project to be carried out by the council will include the fishing jetty known as ‘Pasar Bisik-Bisik’ located not far from the gallery.
“Wakaf huts will be erected at a square near the gallery for visitors to relax and unwind while watching the sun set,” he said when contacted.
Ali said the council has carried out yearly programmes at Kampung Permatang Dec 26 to commemorate the tradegy.
He said this year, a special prayer was held yesterday at a surau to remember the victims.
Ali said various activities have been held over the years, including ‘gotong royong’ programmes to beautify the gallery’s surrounding area.
“The tsunami gallery is a unique attraction by itself. Thus, the state government needs to tap into its potential to bring in more tourists.
"Besides Kota Kuala Muda, the gallery also showcases information on how tragedy happened as well the countries that were also hit by the disaster, including Thailand and Indonesia,” he said.
