Patrols launched to keep men out of ladies coaches in KTM commuter

KUALA LUMPUR: Strict enforcement on men who sit in women’s only coaches provided by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad on its commuter rail service was launched yesterday.

KTMB and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) have started operations and awareness campaigns to prevent the abuse of the women coaches.

KTMB chief executive officer Mohd Rani Hisham said that KTMB was collaborating with SPAD to overcome the issue, which has caused growing concern among the public, through enforcement operations and awareness campaigns.

“KTMB and SPAD will also collaborate to re-evaluate the operational system to ensure that these coaches will be utilised by women passengers only.

“Other than constant surveillance efforts by us, I would like to call on the public to assist us in reminding each other for the benefit of all passengers on the sensitivity and importance of the coaches,” he said in a statement

He said the operation and campaign are among efforts to KTMB’s initiative to educate the public on its women’s only coaches placed in the middle of its trains complete with stickers.

The coaches were introduced by KTMB in 2010 to cater to the comfort and safety of its passengers, also included special waiting areas with pink stickers stating “Ladies Only”.

Rani said there are also plans to introduce the special waiting areas at other main KTM stations.

Recently the social media was abuzz when Facebook user Wan Amiasyazlia Meor lashed out at passengers who ignored and told her off when she asked them to leave because there was a passenger breastfeeding a child.

Amiasyazlia wrote she was on her way to Rawang from Shah Alam when she asked some 10 men to leave the women’s coach. Instead of leaving they berated her, calling her vile names.
