KUALA LUMPUR: Any previous issues or scandals related to the Armed Forces will be investigated fully before action is taken, says new Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu.
Mohamad said he has to obtain more information first from all branches of the armed forces before making a decision on the issues, including that of Malaysia’s purchase of Scorpene submarines.
“We will investigate. If it is hearsay, it can affect the image of a person or department.
“If we cannot resolve these issues via thorough internal investigations or external audits, we will bring it to Cabinet,” he told a press conference at the Defence Ministry.
On the establishment of the King Salman Centre for International Peace in Malaysia, Mohamad said the matter will be discussed with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad before any decision is made.
Meanwhile, speaking on his new role, Mohamad said he is still getting used to managing an entire ministry under the new government.
He said, after being a regular citizen for the longest time, he now has to deal with numerous protocols and rules to safeguard the interests of many.
“There have been no major changes, except that when I speak now, I have to be careful of the facts. I also have to take into account the sentiments of neighbouring countries because I’m no longer just Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president, but also the Defence Minister.
“I need to be careful because whatever I say will be scrutinised by political allies as well as enemies, both within and outside the country.
“I have to get used to this new life. But I won’t change my style,” he said.
Mohamad arrived at Wisma Pertahanan at 9.30am to begin his first day as Defence Minister.
He inspected a guard of honour comprising three officers and 103 personnel from the Royal Malay Regiment First Battalion, led by Major Juniusabdiah Shah Putra Janny.
Also present were Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor , Defence Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi, and other senior ministry officers.
Mohamad said he will be briefed on the ministry’s operations and administration in his first week.
