ARAU: The Perlis royal family has lodged a police report against the state's Barisan Nasional (BN) chief Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and its BN state assemblymen, while urging them to formally apologise to the Raja Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail.
Speaking on behalf of the Perlis royal family, Syed Zolkeflee Syed Abdul Rahman Jamalullail said, the actions and statement made by Shahidan and the other BN Perlis assemblymen were uncalled for.
He added, their behaviour showed that they have no respect for the Perlis royal institution.
“We urge Shahidan to retract his statement made during a press conference yesterday and to apologise to the Raja Perlis.
“They must all respect the decision made by the Raja Perlis, especially regarding the appointment of Datuk Seri Azlan Man as the Perlis Menteri Besar,” he said after lodging the police report at the Arau police station here on Friday.
Syed Zolkeflee said his family was also affected by the behaviour shown by Shahidan and the state representatives.
“We would also like to ask them to stop creating chaos that could cause unease among the people of Perlis,” he added.
It was reported that Shahidan had disputed the appointment of Azlan, who was sworn in as Menteri Besar before Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin on Thursday.
Nine BN assemblymen had boycotted the ceremony, incurring the wrath of Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin.
According to Shahidan, Azlan would be expelled from Umno. He reportedly also said the Perlis ruler should not interfere in the state’s administration.
Meanwhile, Universiti Utara Malaysia political analyst Dr Mohd Azizuddin Sani expressed concern over the issue, saying that failure to form a state government in Perlis within 120 days after the state assembly was dissolved would only lead to the people of Perlis rejecting BN.
He said Azlan should look forward to cooperating with Pakatan Harapan and Pas’ representatives if he still could not get a consensus with other BN assemblymen.
“If he still fails to get a simple majority with the help of the BN representatives, then he should announce the dissolution of the state assembly to give way to a state by-election.
“Another way is that, the Federal government, now being led by PH can declare an emergency in Perlis and after the emergency ends, a state by-election must take place so that the people there can make a choice.
“However, I foresee that BN will be rejected because the people of Perlis are very upset with the crisis surrounding the Menteri Besar’s appointment,” he said when contacted.
BN secured a two-thirds majority in the Perlis state assembly, winning 10 out of 15 state seats. Pakatan Harapan (PH) won three state seats (Kuala Perlis, Sena and Indera Kayangan), while Pas secured Sanglang and Guar Sanji.
