IPOH: Beruas member of Parliament Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham has been sworn in as the new Perak state Speaker for the 14th state legislative assembly.
Ngeh was proposed by Tebing Tinggi assemblyman Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari and supported by Pasir Panjang assemblyman Yahaya Mat Nor.
He obtained 31 votes, while Perak PAS deputy commissioner Misbahul Munir Masduki received three votes, and former deputy speaker, Datuk Nasaruddin Hashim obtained 25 votes.
Ngeh, 57, holds a degree in law from Universiti Malaya.
Earlier, the state legislative assembly secretary, Kamarulariffin Ayob, mentioned that there were only three names of speaker candidates received as of the deadline, June 26.
Pengkalan Baru assemblyman, Datuk Abdul Manaf Hashim, who seemed unhappy with this, stood up and said he was informed that there would be four candidates for the Speaker’s post.
He said there were two from Barisan Nasional and Pas, and another two candidates from Pakatan Harapan.
Abdul Manaf requested Kamarulariffin to reveal the fourth name but was dismissed by the latter.
The assembly then appointed Behrang assemblyman Aminuddin Zulkifli from Amanah as the Deputy Speaker, the only name proposed for the post.
Following the swearing-in of Ngeh, all 59 elected representatives took their oath of office in from of the newly-appointed Speaker at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan here today.
