Will Najib support a bipartisan investigation into IRI and leaked letter to CIA, asks Kit Siang

KUALA LUMPUR: Calling it the most far-fetched version of what happened on May 9 this year, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said he too would like to know how United States (US) think-tank International Republican Institute (IRI) had collaborated with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to topple the previous government.

Lim was referring to claims of such a collaboration to bring down the Barisan Nasional-led government in the 14th General Election (GE14).

The allegation led to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak calling for a government inquiry into the matter.

To that, Lim called for Najib to support a bipartisan investigation into IRI's alleged interference in GE14, as well as an investigation into the Malaysian External Intelligence Office's (MEIO) appeal to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for help.

"If IRI had interfered in Malaysian national politics, as in toppling the UMNO/BN coalition government from power in GE14, I fully agree with any national investigation to expose it.

"However, I do not see any such evidence," Lim said, claiming that instead there was strong evidence of efforts to seek foreign interference, citing the letter written by MEIO's director Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid to the CIA.

In the letter, MEIO that was operating behind the Research Department of the Prime Minister's Department was alleged to have asked the US to support Najib's administration should BN obtain an easy win or a win by just one seat in GE14.

"This letter from Hasanah to CIA has not been denied, although there is allegation that it had been leaked by the CIA," Lim said in a statement today.

"I support a bipartisan investigation both into Hasanah’s appeal to CIA for support and IRI’s alleged interference in GE14.

"Will Najib support such a bipartisan investigation into both cases?" the Iskandar Puteri MP asked.
