KUANTAN: The Government will study the terms of the agreement on the construction of the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park's (MCKIP) wall before deciding whether or not to tear it down.
Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said his ministry is looking at the agreement made by the previous government with MCKIP's management if there were terms to build the wall.
"I am going through the details of the agreement and scrutinising if there are terms included to build the wall. If the construction of the wall does not follow the rules and regulations (not in agreement), then we have to refer (to the law) if it can be torn down.
"We have to identify it (wall) is under whose jurisdiction...is it under the Kuantan Municipal Council," he told reporters today after attending a dialogue session at the Semambu constituency's community centre today.
Saifuddin said he personally does not favor the wall around the industrial park but any decision taken has to be made in accordance with the law.
The Indera Mahkota member of parliament said he has previously met with the top management of a company operating within MCKIP - Alliance Steel Sdn Bhd - to hear their views on several matters.
"During the meeting, they voiced several matters including water issues...they claim that one quarter told them they could do it (take water illegally) while another said they could not.... we noticed they are helpless and we cannot blame them.
"That is why it is important for us to review the terms made by the previous government so we understand and can inform them (MCKIP management) on our requirements," he said, adding that MCKIP's success would benefit both countries but the country's sovereignty and laws have to be adhered to.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during an interview on Thursday with a news portal voiced his intention to take down the wall.
Speaking on Dr Mahathir's recent visit to China, Saifuddin described that it went on smoothly and could be seen as a success for Malaysia overall.
"Both countries will continue to enjoy strong ties and cooperate to explore new sectors including e-commerce, agro-commodity and technology.
“Dr Mahathir informed the China government about Malaysia's current economy scenario and the debts, and China understands Malaysia's predicament," he said.
