PETALING JAYA: A few amendments to the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU) Act 1971 will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat this December to empower the students.
Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the amendments involved freedom for students to participate in politics, better control on student activities and the setting up of student unions in every university.
“The Pakatan Harapan manifesto had promised to abolish the AUKU, but in order to do this involves a lengthy process.
“Therefore, we will make some amendments to the AUKU first.
“The amendments aim to empower students so they will be able to express their views,” he said after the Soal Rakyat recording session, hosted by Ally Iskandar and Hazrena Kassim at Sri Pentas here, today.
Commenting further, Maszlee said that the freedom given to the students comes with responsibility.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry is targeting more than 10,000 schools nationwide to achieve 100 per cent of Smart School’s standard by 2020.
“We still have two per cent of schools that have not meet the standard. I’m confident that we can achieve this in the next two years.
“This Smart School feature is based on international standards in terms of visionary leadership domains, professional development and assessment, and student-centered learning,” he said.
When achieved, almost five million national school students from 10,208 schools nationwide will have access to education through information and communication technology (ICT).
This will put Malaysia in the one-third top tier amongst countries with the best education system worldwide, by 2050.
