KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s introduction of the unlimited travel pass is part of efforts to give birth to a cashless society that will curb corruption with traceable electronic transactions.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said a cashless society meant that payments would be made through electronic payment platforms.
“The government is thinking of ways to introduce a cashless society. When we use cash, sometimes it is used for corruption among others.
“When we introduce a cashless (system), it will make it difficult for them to hide and give cash bribes to anyone as everything is recorded.
“Each transaction is recorded in the bank among others so that we know who gives and receives and receives cash inducements.
“This is a way to fight corruption. If there is no corruption, then the people’s cost of living decreases.
“When we look at the widespread corruption in our country, each work becomes more expensive due to (corrupt) payments to certain quarters to approve applications,” he said.
Dr Mahathir was speaking during the launch of the MY100 and MY50 unlimited travel passes at KL Sentral here today.
Also among those present were Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew, his deputy Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi.
