She is free to comment - PM on granddaughter's anti ICERD rally remarks

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his granddaughter is free to give comments when asked on Melia Serena Mukhriz's remarks on last Saturday's rally to give thanks to the government for not acceding to the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

"She is free to give comments. You can ask her," was the prime minister's brief reply.

Melia Serena who is the daughter of Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir posted a photo of the rally on Instagram, expressing her 'disgust'.

"Disgusting. Take all offence, I don't care. Extremely disappointing," she posted on her Instastories.

"2020 vision gone because of all of you," she wrote.

The rally on Saturday saw police estimating an attendance of some 55,000 while the organisers estimated a 500,000 turnout.

The rally was jointly organised by UMMAH, Muafakat and the Kedaulatan Rakyat secretariat (RAKYAT) and saw the attendance of political figures from Umno and PAS.

It was to oppose Malaysia acceding to ICERD as well as to give thanks that the government had earlier announced it would not be signing the treaty.

Among those present at the rally were Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as well as former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
