KOTA KINABALU: The Papar and Kota Kinabalu Health Departments confirmed that they have issued a temporary closure for two branches of a mamak restaurant due to sanitation problems.
A spokesperson for the Papar department said it received a viral video of a maggot-infested fried chicken believed to have taken place at a restaurant in Kinarut.
“We received a viral video and conducted a check on the alleged restaurant as we can’t take action based on the video alone.
“Checks found that the restaurant failed to follow procedures and has a sanitation problem. So we ordered the restaurant to close temporarily for cleaning works,” he said when contacted today.
According to the spokesperson, the restaurant could only be opened once it gets the approval from the Papar Health Officer.
“We’ve given the restaurant 14 days to clean the premise and it’s up to the owner to request for re-evaluation before business can resume,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu health officer Julaidah Sharip said following the viral video, an investigation was conducted at another branch of the mamak restaurant in Kota Kinabalu.
“Investigation found that the premise failed to maintain cleanliness and has been ordered to close for cleaning works and upgrades before it can operate again,” she said, adding that the closure was done under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.
The 53-second video which went viral on social media showed a fried chicken with maggot in it and the person recording the video also recorded the surrounding of the restaurant.
