KUALA LUMPUR: The Conference of Rulers have ended their special meeting to elect the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong in Istana Negara here.
The eight rulers who attended the meeting began leaving the main gate of the palace after their one and-half-hour meeting beginning at 11.15am.
The meeting was to determine who will be Agong for a five-year-period under Malaysia's constitutional monarchy.
The motorcade of the Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin was the first seen leaving Istana Negara at 12.45pm.
The rulers that followed were Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Sultan of Perak
Sultan Nazrin Muizuddin Shah and Sultan of Kedah Sultan Sallehuddin Almarhum Sultan Badlishah.
The Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah was the last to be seen leaving the palace at 12.59pm.
Al-Sultan Abdullah was seen rolling down his window of his Rolls Royce and waving at members of the press as he left with his motorcade.
The rulers decided at the special meeting today on who would ascend the throne as Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and his deputy.
The installation of the 16th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong was mooted after Sultan Muhammad V stepped down from the throne on Jan 6.
The New Straits Times reported today that the rulers attending the special meeting of the Conference of Rulers will rulers would likely adhere to the rotation system.
This will likely mean the ascension of Pahang's sixth modern ruler, Al-Sultan Abdullah as the new Agong. Based on the rotation system, the Sultans of Johor and Perak will follow.
A statement on the outcome of the special meeting is expected to be released later.
