Late Sultan Ahmad Shah played instrumental role in UMP's development, says VC

KUANTAN: Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), has expressed sadness over the demise of Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah Al Musta’in Billah Sultan Abu Bakar on Wednesday, describing it as a huge loss to the people in Pahang, particularly UMP.

UMP vice-chancellor, Professor Ir Dr Wan Azhar Wan Yusof said the late ruler had laid down the foundation stone for the campus on November 2, 2002.

"Sultan Ahmad Shah is a ruler, builder and engineer, who has brought invaluable progress and development to the state of Pahang. Various education development projects were carried out during his rule including laying UMP's permanent campus foundation stone in 2002.

"The setting up of the UMP campus in Kuala Pahang in Pekan has emerged as a major landmark towards becoming a world-class technological university," he said in a statement.

On behalf of UMP, Wan Azhar expressed his condolences to the Pahang royal family saying the former Sultan had contributed significantly towards the development of the university and the state as well.

He said Sultan Ahmad Shah was conferred an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Civil Engineering at the University's Commemorative and 4th Convocation ceremony held in 2009.

"UMP has also produced a book titled" The Ruler, The Builder, The Engineer" to appreciate his contribution in the civil engineering field as it was something close to his heart, "he said.
