MMU students protest activity fee hike

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 1,000 Multimedia University (MMU) students gathered at the university's President Square in Melaka this morning for a peaceful protest to oppose what they say is an unfair increment of Student Activity Fees (SAF).

The fees, which were previously RM 110, will be increased to RM500 annually.

President of Student’s Representative Council (SRC), Pouria Zibaei said that the announcement for the fee increment was made without the approval of the council, clubs and societies.

A total of 11,500 signatures were collected by SRC from students and submitted to the management on July 19.

Pouria said the management had not replied and that was why the council decided to organise a protest to voice their objections over the fee hike.

“Representatives of clubs and societies were warned not to join the protest otherwise there would be disciplinary action against them,” he said today.

The university, in a memo to students, said the increase will only be implemented in April 2020 and that the decision made was for the benefit of all students to enable student activities with higher impact.
