Three foreigners, five locals served notices for smoking at Tawau airport

TAWAU: Eight people, including three foreigners, were served notices to be at the court for smoking at the Tawau airport.

District Environmental Health officer Rahman Sampe said during a special two-day operation that ended at 10pm yesterday, the team had detected people who were oblivious about the no-smoking signs that are being put up at strategic locations throughout the airport.

“Whether they are foreigners or locals, they have to obey smoking prohibition at areas gazetted under Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004.

“Those who have been served notices have to go to court for the charge framed under Section 32B or pay compound of RM250 for every offence,” Rahman said in a statement.

He also urged tour agents to assist the authority by informing their guests on the smoking ban.

Besides airports, he said the same operation is also expanded to other government premises such as hospitals, bus stops and public transportation, stadium and other gazetted areas.

“Public can also assist the authority by lodging reports on any offences on smoking ban at prohibited areas for the wellbeing of everyone,” he added.
