HANOI: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad took the VinFast model Lux SA (A) 2.0 for a spin during his visit to the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park, here.
The VinFast is Vietnam's sports-utility vehicle (SUV) developed by the country's real estate developer VinGroup.
The group launched the first phase of its car manufacturing project in 2017.
The project was part of VinGroup's expansion plan to enter Vietnam's heavy industry apart from attempting to become a prestigious car manufacturer in South East Asia by producing 500,000 units a year by 2025.
VinFast is the first carmaker in Vietnam with the capability to do its own stamping and welding at international standards.
The Lux SA 2.0 comes with a four cylinder DOHC 2.0L turbo engine with 228hp capacity and a maximum torque of 350 Nm.
Three other models under the VinFast brand are the Sedan Lux SA 2.0 and the Fadil 1.5.
Dr Mahathir is currently on a three-day official visit to Vietnam which began on Monday.
