KOTA KINABALU: Chaos erupted at a major shopping mall here on Monday when a brawl flared up between two groups of men.
At least one person was injured in the clash, which saw participants violently flinging chairs at each other.
A 37-second video of the incident, believed to have been captured on a mobile phone, has gone viral on social media.
The footage shows at least two dozen men engaged in launching projectiles at each other at the lobby of the mall’s cineplex.
The fight spilled down to the lower floor of the mall as one group retreated via the stairs, and chairs rained down on them.
According to police, the injured individual was a 29-year-old shop owner who was treated as an outpatient at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Habibi Majinji said that the melee was triggered when the shop owner was beaten up by several men. The attackers were then confronted by friends of the shop owner, which led to the mass ruckus.
He said no arrest has been made so far, but that police have identified the individuals involved and are urging them to come forward to assist with investigations.
Habibi added that the case is being probed under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
