Penang's first Starbucks Signing Store, fourth in the world, opens today [NSTTV]

GEORGE TOWN: Starbucks marked another milestone with the launch of Malaysia's second Starbucks Signing Store here at Jalan Burmah today.

The fourth such outlet globally, it is dedicated to offer employment and development opportunities to members of the deaf community in the state.

The outlet will have in employment seven deaf partners from Penang, fluent in sign language, assisted by other able bodied staff.

"We established the Starbucks Signing Store three years ago in Bangsar Village II, Kuala Lumpur, as a place to celebrate the contributions of our deaf partners. The response we received has been overwhelming.

"By valuing the perspectives that people with disabilities bring into the workplace, we are able to provide a uniquely uplifting experience that made people feel represented and give them a sense of belonging," said Starbucks Malaysia and Brunei managing director Sydney Quays at the launch of the store.

The store was opened by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. Present were United States Ambassador to Malaysia Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir and Berjaya Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Robin Tan Yeong Ching.

The Signing Store is also a chance for career progression where the deaf partners can undergo Coffee Masters Programme to deepen their coffee knowledge and barista craft.

The deaf baristas can be distinguished by their black apron with a special embroidery of 'Starbucks' in Malaysian sign language.

Besides providing employment opportunities for the deaf community, Starbucks hopes that such initiative would provide them with transferable soft skills and sustainable career path.

Chow, in his speech, said the Starbucks’ effort would increase employment opportunities as well as accessibility, specifically to the deaf community.

"It is truly inspiring and humbling to know Starbucks supports and empowers the community it serves.

"In many ways, the community and social values embodied by Starbucks, also reflects the vision of the Penang government to create a truly inclusive society where nobody is left behind," he said.
