Ex-NST sub-editor dies of heart attack

GEORGE TOWN: Former New Straits Times (NST) sub-editor Khor Chau Meng died of a heart attack on Tuesday. He was 69.

His younger brother, Rizal Ross, said Khor was running errands in the city when he experienced shortness of breath and collapsed. Passers-by immediately called an ambulance, but to no avail.

Khor leaves a wife, Ooi Phaik Suan, and four brothers.

He joined the NST in 1986. During his 24 years with the company, he had served in various departments such as editorial and administration.

NST production editor David Rajan Christy described Khor as a kind and calm man.

“He was the first person I met when I joined NST in the mid-90s. He was very kind to me, often offering guidance.

“Over the years, I noticed one thing about him - his calmness. He wasn’t the type who was easily flustered,” he said.

Former chief photographer CH Loh said he lost a good friend who was very helpful to everyone he met.

Loh, who had known Khor for over 20 years, said Khor was also someone who always had a smile on his face.

“He was my lunch partner in NST. Khor was a very helpful person. Although we were in different departments, he would give me notes about any new camera models that he had gathered.

“He was always willing to assist anyone who needed help,” Loh said.

Meanwhile, editorial administration manager Hani Mazrita Hamzah said Khor was a nice man, who was like a big brother to her.

“Khor was always keen on sharing knowledge on the editorial system back then. He even taught me about editorial graphics and photography.

“He was a good mentor, and I’ve lost a good friend,” Hani said.

According to Rizal, Khor’s funeral service was be held today (Thursday) at Mount Eskrine, George Town, at 11am. The cortege then left for the Bukit Gantung Crematorium.
