PM's plea: Stay at home [NSTTV[

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has pleaded to Malaysians not to take the opportunity to hold gatherings, go on holiday or ‘balik kampung’ during the 14-day Movement Control Order period.

In his speech via a live telecast tonight, Muhyiddin pointed out that many had returned to their hometowns, despite the MCO being in place.

“Just stay at home and protect yourself and your family. The highways towards the north, south and east were congested and bus stations, too, were crowded.

“I plead to all of you. Please. Stay put where you are. Those in Kuala Lumpur, stay in Kuala Lumpur. Those in Johor Baru, stay in Johor Baru. Those in Penang, stay in Penang.

“If you have plans to go back, cancel them for the time being. I ask for your help for just two weeks,” he said.

He stressed that the MCO was to break the chain of infection, and to ensure that the number of people who contract the virus could be curbed.

He explained that the period of 14 days for the MCO was decided as Covid-19 had an incubation period of two weeks.

“There have been cases where symptoms only showed up after (the two weeks).

“The government hopes that after the two-week period, those who show symptoms can be successfully isolated and given treatment, making Malaysia free from Covid-19.”

Muhyiddin warned that if the MCO doesn’t successfully contain the spread, the government might have to continue with the restriction.

“Therefore, it is important for us to isolate ourselves and our families from being exposed to the Covid-19 virus by staying at home.”
