GEORGE TOWN: They are small reminders of hope and encouragement to people as they face the worrying Covid-19 pandemic.
Some hotels here have lit up their buildings with special messages and heart shapes in a show of solidarity to the people.
Equatorial Hotel, Sunway Hotel and St Giles Wembley Hotel display heart shapes as a way to send love to frontliners and the community.
Another hotel is displaying encouraging messages instead.
Olive Tree Hotel marketing and communications manager Lim Hui Hui said its building has been lit up occasionally since late last month to remind people to stay home during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.
"Initially we lit up the words 'BE SAFE' and recently we changed it to 'WE CAN'.
"It is a simple yet meaningful message we are sending to the people out there," she told the New Straits Times.
The trend of hotels lighting up heart shapes on their exteriors is not limited to the Pearl of the Orient. Some hotels and buildings in Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak have been doing the same since the pandemic and ensuing MCO.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the MCO will be extended by another two weeks until April 28 to break the chain of the deadly Covid-19 infection.
As of noon yesterday, Malaysia recorded 118 new Covid-19 cases bringing the tally to 4,346 since the outbreak.
The death toll was reported at 70 while 1,830 patients have recovered from Covid-19 in the country.
