On Earth Day, Malaysia moves to control climate change impact

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will continue to play an important role to ensure that future challenges from climate change impact can be controlled through the implementation of various initiatives.

The Environment and Water Minister Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the initiatives include strengthening the governance, enforcement, development of legal frameworks, policy reviews and developing suitable action plans.

"The public are encouraged to be aware on the importance of preserving and protecting the environment.

"During the Movement Control Order (MCO), the quality of air and rivers have improved.

“The main challenge now is to continue taking care of the environment once the MCO is lifted as it is our responsibility.

"This is in line with the Islamic principles which call on the people to treat the Earth fairly and in a prosperous way," he said in a statement issued today.

In conjunction with the 50th Earth Day celebration today, he said the ministry has already begun to organised several programmes and activities through the social media.

The programmes and activities, he said, include special Earth Day 'webinar' (online seminar), nature talks, climate change discussion, creative videos and posters competition and screening of Eko movie on Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Fest (KLEFFlix).

"This year's Earth Day celebration is themed "Climate Action".

The objective is to bring forth the global efforts in the bid to

reduce the climate change impact from the manmade works.

"Although the celebration this year could not be celebrated due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, it will still be conducted as to express our collective intention to appreciate the Earth.

"Lastly, on behalf of the ministry, I would like to wish Happy Earth Day to all Malaysians," he said.
