Muhyiddin and Trump discuss pandemic in phone call

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and United States President Donald Trump discussed several issues including bilateral relations and the Covid-19 pandemic, via phone tonight.

In a Facebook posting, Muhyiddin said Trump had congratulated him and the new government.

He said they discussed the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the approaches taken by both countries to manage the spread of the disease.

"I received a phone call from His Excellency Donald J. Trump, the President of the United States tonight.

"In addition to congratulating me and the new government, we expressed our commitment to further strengthen the comprehensive cooperation relationship between Malaysia and the United States," he wrote.

During the 30-minute conversation, Muhyiddin said they emphasised the importance of working with the international community to reduce the impact of the pandemic on the global community and the global economy.

These efforts, he said, include enhancing cooperation in the development of vaccines and medicines as well as ensuring equal access to the Covid-19 vaccine.

"At the same time, our two countries have also come to an agreement to ensure smooth supply of critical equipment and other supplies, especially during this global health crisis.

"In addition, we exchanged views on issues of mutual interest in the context of maintaining global peace and international security," he added.
