KUALA LUMPUR: Cybercrime and reliance on technology have become serious issues threatening Malaysia and this has led to new challenges and problems including undermining national cybersecurity.
Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said if there were no measures taken on the matter, it would have a huge impact.
This, he said, would include jeopardising the harmony and safety of the country, as well as undermining the nation and people's religious and racial unity.
Lee proposed to the government six ways to curb cyber threats and cyber crimes in the country.
"First, strengthen cybersecurity infrastructure and regulate communications and multimedia ecosystem in the country.
"Second, attention should be given towards creating awareness among citizens over the use of digital devices in a thoughtful and ethical manner.
"Third, implement various cybersecurity awareness programmes to provide exposure and education for the users on the danger of cyber threats and crimes, for instance, the National Cyber Ethics Initiative (NCEI)," Lee said in a statement today.
He also urged the government to upgrade the competency of existing cybersecurity practitioners, as well as nurture new generation of credible cybersecurity practitioners and enhance their competitiveness in maintaining the country's online-security.
Lee also said the government should apply holistic approaches and adapt human resources, processes, and technologies in addressing cybersecurity issues.
"We also need to adapt to the current situation, be more innovative and respond more efficiently and quickly to any cyber threat that is happening now or for the future," he said.
