MUMO distances itself from ex-Miss Universe Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO) expressed dismay and has distanced itself from former Miss Universe Malaysia, Samantha Katie James, over her racially charged social media posting earlier today.

In a statement tonight, MUMO described the postings uploaded by James, amid the Black Lives Matter protests in America over the death of George Floyd, as inappropriate, offensive, unacceptable and hurtful.

"The views expressed on Samantha's personal Instagram account are her own personal view and are neither the view nor position of MUMO. Samantha Katie James is not contracted to MUMO and has not represented the organisation since June 2018.

"MUMO stands for a non-racial society and strongly condemns all acts of racism and prejudice anywhere in the world," said MUMO.

In a series of Instagram stories under the handle samanthakayty, she sparked outrage among social media users in a posting addressed "To the black people" and that they should "Relax, take it as a challenge, makes you stronger.

She went on to say, "You chose to be born as a 'coloured' person in America for a reason. To learn a certain lesson. Accept it as it is, till now hunger and poverty still exists. It is what it is. It's evitable. Best you can do is remain calm, protect heart, don't allow it to crumble. That's your responsibility."

She said that she does not live in America and that the protests had notning to do with her but she viewed it as the "whites" had won.

"Because if you're angry, you respond in rage and anguish. That means it has power over you. They have power over you," she posted, along with accompanying "Foolish Humans" caption.
