PUTRAJAYA: The government today gave its assurance that the setting and review of electricity tariffs in the country take into consideration the welfare of the people.
"I want to assure the people that whenever we conduct a review of electricity tariffs, the wellbeing of the people (is top of mind)," said Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, today.
He was asked to comment on whether the government will conduct a review of current electricity tariffs to ease the financial constraints faced by many consumers impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Energy Commission (EC) chief executive officer Abdul Razib Dawood said the Incentive-Based Regulatory (IBR) framework for the Third Regulatory Period (RP3) will begin next year.
"Every cycle of the IBR, amongst others, will include a review of the structure of (electricity) tariffs.
"The government will continue to conduct reviews on electricity (pricing)," he said.
It was previously reported that Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) was scheduled to submit the IBR RP3 proposal to the EC in December last year.
The RP3 will run from 2021 until 2023.
