Muhyiddin confident bilateral ties will continue under Singapore's PM Lee

KUALA LUMPUR: The existing bilateral relations between Malaysia and Singapore will continue under the leadership of its Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

He said as neighbours and Malaysia's closest Asean partner, the continued cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore would benefit the citizens of both countries in terms of economic growth, peace and prosperity.

Muhyiddin said this in a Facebook post today, after congratulating Lee on his party's victory in the Singapore General Election yesterday (Saturday).

"On unresolved bilateral issues, we have agreed that both countries must remain positive in finding solutions centred on common interests.

"We also stressed the importance of solving any problems and issues amicably and even agreed that this would be the basis and guidance in any current and future negotiations.

"This is to preserve the close and important ties that have long been formed between Malaysia and Singapore."

Muhyiddin also raised the discussion on the reciprocal green lane and the periodic commuting arrangement between Malaysia and Singapore.

He expressed Malaysia's hopes to see both initiatives would be finalised and implemented soon.

"We also discussed the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System, and we are confident that the ongoing active discussions between officials of both countries could be finalised in the near future.

"I also conveyed my gratitude to Singapore for agreeing to extend the suspension period for the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail project from June 1 to Dec 31, 2020, without any cost or penalties imposed on Malaysia."

This was especially significant, Muhyiddin said, in the reflection of the good relations between the two countries.

"We ended the call by expressing commitment to promptly meet to discuss various issues, as soon as the Covid-19 pandemic situation improves in both countries."
