Cabinet ministers' asset declaration to be made public soon

KUALA LUMPUR: The assets and earnings of cabinet ministers that have been declared to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will only be made public once the cabinet makes a decision on the new method of display.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said the public would be free to access the declarations once they have been uploaded on the MACC website.

He said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had announced that all ministers were required to declare their assets and following that, the declarations would be made available on the MACC website.

"However the declarations would only be displayed once the cabinet decides on the new method that will be used to display the sum of declared assets and income," said Takiyuddin in a written parliamentary reply to Wong Kah Woh (DAP - Ipoh Timur).

Wong had asked the government on whether it would be continuing the former administration's policy of having MPs disclose their earnings and assets to MACC and display it online.

Takiyuddin also said that until July 6, a total of 43 MPs have declared their earnings and assets.

He however said that MACC was merely a platform for the display of the declarations and it was not their responsibility to force anyone to declare their assets.

On July 1 last year, the Dewan Rakyat had unanimously approved a motion compelling all MPs to declare their earnings and assets. This included disclosing the income and wealth of their spouses, children and trustees through a statutory declaration within three months before Dec 5, 2019.
