'Face masks must be three-layered, and cover nose and mouth'

PUTRAJAYA: The usage of non-medical face masks must follow criteria and recommendations set by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in welcoming the government's move to make the wearing of face masks mandatory, said the WHO recommends that fabric or cloth face masks should consist of three layers.

He said the innermost layer should be one that absorbs water (hydrophilic), and made of cotton or cotton blend.

The outermost layer, he said, should be made of material that prevents water absorption (hydrophobic), such as polypropylene, polyester, or a mixture.

"This layer can limit outside contamination from penetrating the wearer's nose and mouth."

Dr Noor Hisham said the middle layer should be made of synthetic non-woven materials, such as polypropylene or a cotton layer, which can improve filtration or resistance of liquid droplets.

"Additionally, the face mask must be worn correctly and should cover the nose until the chin.

"Improper usage, by leaving it hanging on the neck, forehead, or covering only part of the nose and mouth carries risk of contamination or infection to the wearer," he added.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri earlier today announced that mask-wearing will be made mandatory in public transportation and crowded public areas from Aug 1.

Those who fail to comply with the new law will face a fine of up to RM1,000.
