Another freak road accident: Portion of tower crane falls onto Myvi

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman escaped unhurt after a portion of a tower crane fell off a trailer lorry and onto her car at Jalan SS2/24, Petaling Jaya, yesterday.

The incident occured at 5.45pm as the 25-year-old woman was driving home in her Perodua Myvi, Bernama reported.

"Suddenly, a part of the tower crane fell off from the trailer lorry and hit her car. The impact damaged the roof, windscreen and several other parts of the car - but the victim escaped unhurt.

"Members of the public rushed to provide assistance to the victim and help control the traffic situation," Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said in a statement today.

An initial investigation found that the tower crane, which was being transported, had knocked into two telephone poles along the road, causing it to fall off the trailer lorry.

Nik Ezanee said that the victim has lodged a police report, but the trailer lorry driver has yet to do so.

"The investigation paper was opened under Rules 19 of the Road Traffic Rules 166/59, as the cargo carried on the trailer had fallen and caused an accident," he said.

The freak incident was the second such road mishap to occur yesterday.

In Bandar Tasik Selatan, along the MRR2, a woman cheated death when a concrete parapet slab from the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) fell onto and crushed her car. She suffered only a hand injury in the 5.45pm accident.
