Avoid physical, face-to-face registration, varsities told

KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) has called for all institutes of higher learning to postpone physical or face-to-face registration of new and returning students to their campus for the October intake.

The ministry in a statement today said all student registration exercise could be undertaken via online.

"All student registration matters can be done internally online, as well as aspects of teaching and learning until new announcement about it is made," it said.

The ministry said it was concerned with the views of various parties, including that voiced by students, parents and the community, following an increase in Covid-19 cases that has taken place only a few days before the admission date of new students.

It said the ministry was also concerned over the health, safety and well-being of students, staff and all parties involved from the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Therefore, MoHE recommends to all Higher Education Institutions to first adjourn physical registration/ face-to-face new and returning students to campus," it said.

The ministry said the decision to postpone the physical/face-to-face registration of students involved must be made in order to preserve the well-being and safety of all parties.

"For students who are already present in campus and are pursuing academic activities, they can remain on their respective campuses.

"The institutes of higher leaning have also been asked to help with all the of these group of students (in campus)".

The ministry said any questions related to students movement back to campus as well as teaching sessions and learning can be referred directly to the respective institutes of higher learning.

It also recommended for all institutes of higher learning to postpone all programmes or activities involving on-campus gatherings.

"MoHE has also taken proactive steps to negotiate with airline companies urging them to re-consider re-scheduling flights of students returning to their campus, especially for those who had purchased flight tickets back to their respective institutes of higher learning.

"As a result of those negotiations, airline companies have agreed to re-schedule student flights until

December 31, 2020," it said.
