Electricity tariff discount until year-end for 7 million customers

KUALA LUMPUR: More than seven million customers in Peninsular Malaysia will continue to enjoy electricity tariff discounts until this December.

The government introduced the Economic Stimulus Discount from March under the People's Concerned Economic Stimulus Package (Prihatin).

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) said than seven million residential users (Tariff A - Domestic) in Peninsular Malaysia will continue to enjoy electricity bill discounts of up to 50 per cent, based on monthly electricity consumption, from Oct 1 to Dec 31.

Other consumer discounts are:

- Between 1-200kWj or until RM43.60: 50 per cent discount;

- Between 201-300kWj or RM43.70-RM77.00: 25 per cent discount;

- Between 301-600kWj or RM77.10-RM231.80: 15 per cent discount;

- Between 601-900kWj or RM232.35-RM395.60: 10 per cent discount;

- More than 900kWj or in excess of RM396.17: 5 per cent discount

TNB said it supports the government's efforts to reduce the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the people and the steps taken to help the people adjust to the current economic situation.

"This discount extension initiative by the government prioritises those who are in need due to the Covid-19 pandemic," said TNB chief retail officer Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan.

To support the government's efforts, he said TNB is also continuing with the following three initiatives for the benefit of residential consumers until the end of this year. They are:

- Easy Payment Plan (option for users to pay bills in installments without additional surcharge);

- Late payment surcharge exemption (for the period March 18 to Dec 31); and

- Postponement of supply cutting activities, exception being applications from registered users and instructions from the authorities.

"The responsibility to curb the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic is our joint effort. We should care for each other in this difficult time, "added Megat Jalaluddin.
