KOTA BARU: Kelantan has roped in Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) to assist the state in managing the operations of sewerage plants in the state.
The move follows an agreement signed between Services Sdn Bhd executive director Datuk Dr Wan Zawawi Wan Ismail and IWK chief executive officer Narendram Maniam today.
It is hoped that the move will enable a more systematic effluent services in the state.
The signing was witnessed Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
Also present were Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob and his deputy, Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.
Speaking to reporters, Tuan Ibrahim said the change, effective Jan 1, next year, would help standardise the operations of sewerage system in the country.
"Besides that, it will also ensure that treated wastewater achieves a high standard especially in efforts to conserve water resources and the environment," he said.
Tuan Ibrahim said based on the contract, IWK has agreed to provide the state with 33 septic tanks and 13 pump stations.
"IWK will also provide cleaning services to 81,275 individual septic tanks and 259,343 traditional tanks in the state.
"The handing over of this new project will open the doors for more significant involvement of the Federal government in modernising the sewerage system in the state," he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad hoped that the handing over would also lead to more job opportunities to local contractors in the state.
