KUALA LUMPUR: Rapid KL Monorail services in the city centre were briefly disrupted when one of its four-carriage train's rubber tyre exploded this morning.
The KL Sentral-bound train was approaching the Maharajalela station around 7.15am when one of its 64 tyres burst and caught fire.
Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, which manages the Rapid KL Monorail services, said the explosion was believed to be due to low tyre pressure.
"No passenger was hurt in the incident. All passengers disembarked at the Maharajalela station before the fire began at 7.15am," said the company in a statement.
The Fire and Rescue Department, it said, arrived on the scene at 7.25am. The fire was put out just before 9am.
"For the convenience of passengers, alternate train shuttle services for travel between the Titiwangsa and Hang Tuah stations were activated at 7.38am.
"At the same time, complimentary shuttle vans were provided to ferry passengers between KL Sentral, Tun Sambathan and Maharajalela stations," it said.
The affected train was towed from the Maharajalela station at 10.59am to the depot for further investigation. Rapid Rail said passengers affected by the disruption were offered refund coupons which could be claimed at any KL Monorail counter.
"We deeply regret the incident and apologise for any inconvenience caused," said the company.
