Public urged to stay at home during MCO 2.0

PETALING JAYA: Police have warned that they will not go easy on individuals found 'loitering' or wandering about without a valid reason, during the Movement Control Order (MCO 2.0) period.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said as the number of Covid-19 cases increased it was time that people heed the stay at home instruction seriously.

"Selangor recorded the highest cases in the last few days and people should not be leaving their houses unless it's for essentials or an emergency.

"We succeeded in flattening the Covid-19 curve last year through similar restrictions, and I am sure we will do it again. That is also why police are going all out to make sure people do not abuse the privileges and abide the MCO rules by staying home," he said after visiting the roadblock erected near the Damansara Toll Plaza here today.

Since Jan 13 to today, Nik Ezanee said, police have issued compounds to 126 motorists and remanded 11 more for flouting the MCO restrictions at four roadblocks enforced in the district.

There are also five roads in the district which have been closed. They were manned by police and were inaccessible to the public.

Nik Ezanee said so far about 300 officers and personnel from the headquarters have been assigned on the ground for the MCO.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, Nik Ezanee said police detained two men for fighting in public at Section 17/6A in Damansara last night.

"Police received a complaint from a nearby resident at 7.23 pm alleging a man had tried to run down a few pedestrians and was involved in a fight," he said.

He said when police arrived at the scene, they found two men, age 20 and 21 fighting. A windshield of a car belonging to one of the men had also been smashed.

"The two were arrested. Police are looking for one more suspect who is believed to have fled upon seeing the authorities.

"Checks on the two also revealed that the 20-year-old suspect had previous records for fighting, unlawful possession of a weapon, and criminal intimidation," Nik Ezanee said, adding both men were remanded for three days to facilitate investigations.
