KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Society of Infection Control and Infectious Diseases (MyICID) reminds everyone to stay vigilant and practise preventive measures as they fete the Lunar New Year tomorrow.
In a statement today, MyICID encouraged people to hold virtual gatherings as physical gatherings carry the risk of spreading Covid-19.
However, if a physical gathering is necessary among different households, MyICID suggested several pragmatic precautions for both hosts and attendees to enjoy safer reunion dinners.
"Discuss with all attendees before the gathering date to explain and manage the expectations and the rules for the gathering.
"If any of the invitees are ill (cough, fever, sore throat etc), please do not attend the gathering. If any of the host members are ill, we suggest that you cancel the gathering.
"Keep number of participants to a minimum although the government has allowed up to 15 people.
"Hold the gathering in a well-ventilated area, for example, in a big room with all windows open and use portable air purifiers if these are available.
"If possible, consider having the gatherings and meals outdoors," read the statement.
Besides that, the group also urged people to continue practising the new norms while mingling with their loved ones.
"Wear face masks when others are around and maintain physical distancing of at least one-metre from each other. If you are not wearing face masks, distance yourselves more than two metres apart.
"Wash your hands with soap and water or sanitise using alcohol hand rubs before partaking in the meal or before touching your mouth, eyes or nose.
"Ensure the seats at the dining table are well spaced out at all times, except when you are actively eating or drinking.
"Minimize the time you spend without your mask at the eating table. Preferably, have utensils separated for each dish.
"Keep your face masks on during the 'Lo Hei' event as well," MyICID said, wishing all Malaysians a happy, prosperous and safe Chinese New Year.
