More than 50pct bed capacity at MEC Jawi low-risk Covid-19 treatment centre

NIBONG TEBAL: The biggest low-risk Covid-19 treatment centre (PKRC) in the northern region, at the Mara Excellence Centre (MEC) in Jawi here, has reached more than 50 per cent bed capacity.

The Secretariat of the low-risk Covid-19 treatment centre at MEC Jawi, Captain (PA) C. Sehgar said after being in operations for the past nine days, the centre, which is supposed to house Covid-19 patients in the north, had recorded 550 patients from Penang alone.

He said the number of foreigners at the centre was three times more than that of the locals.

According to him, the centre is able to accommodate about 1,000 beds at all four blocks of the MEC building.

"Nevertheless, there has been several patients discharged and transferred in the last few days.

"Yesterday alone, some 107 Covid-19 patients were discharged," he said after the working visit by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Functions) Datuk Mastura Mohd Yazid to the centre today.

Mastura was briefed on the operations at the centre before she was taken on a tour.

Meanwhile, Sehgar gave his assurance that security at the centre was under control.

"We strive to improve and address any shortcomings (if any) as we move along," he added.
