PASIR PUTEH: A bloom of poisonous jellyfish has been detected at Pantai Tok Bali, here.
More than 15 poisonous jellyfish, called the Aurelia Aurita Moon Jellyfish, were detected by a team of Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel.
The jellyfish have been inhabiting the beach area, making it highly dangerous for visitors to participate in water-related activities around the area.
Civil Defence Captain Nik Mohd Nor Nik Mat said what is worrying about the presence of these jellyfish is that it poses a danger to visitors, especially children.
"Visitors often come by the beach to bathe, especially during the weekends and school holidays.
"We have taken precautions by flying a red flag at the location inhabited by the jellyfish to alert visitors and prevent unwanted incidents from happening.
"Even though these jellyfish are harmless, their stings can affect individuals with allergies.
"If you are stung by any jellyfish, it is best to immediately rub the area with sand and clean it with running water," he said in a statement, today.
Nik Mohd Nor said the APM team has also deployed beach rescuers to be on stand-by at the beach area.
He also advised members of the public, especially parents, to keep a close eye on their children's movements and whereabouts when at the beach, and to also be aware of the existence of these jellyfish.
"These jellyfish have always been around in the sea, but it is worrying if they attack the visitors.
"We have had such incidents in the past, at the same beach area.
"So, for everybody's sake, especially the visitors and their kids, it is best to avoid any water activities including bathing at these areas," he said.
