KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, have conveyed their condolences to the family of former Foreign Affairs Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Ahmad Kamil Jaafar, who died this morning.
According to a statement posted on Istana Negara's Facebook page, Their Majesties also expressed their sadness over Ahmad Kamil's passing, and hoped that his family would remain patient and strong in this time of grief.
"Their Majesties deeply appreciate the services and contributions of the late Ahmad Kamil, and have described his passing as a great loss to the country.
"The King and Queen also pray for his soul to be blessed by Allah and placed among the righteous," said the statement.
The late Ahmad Kamil, who was born in Kedah in 1937, had served as Foreign Ministry secretary-general from 1989 and retired three years later, but he was reappointed on a contract basis to the same post for four years until 1996.
He had also served as the Malaysian ambassador to several countries including Vietnam, Japan and Switzerland as well as Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva (1980).
In 2003, he was made the Special Envoy of the Prime Minister to the 13th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). --BERNAMA
