KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Library is aiming for five million users this year at its libraries and other services.
Its director Maria Sinti said the target was set following the reopening of the library's facilities during the recovery movement control order in the state.
She added there are 26 branches including 13 mobile facilities to cater to their services for the public, as well as 11,000 ebooks.
"Despite the pandemic last year, the Library managed to record 3.5 million people using our services which also included our Facebook and Instagram.
"With the reopening of the new library at the Sabah Administrative Centre and soon in Kinabatangan, we have set a target of five million," she said, adding to date they have achieved one million users for this year.
Maria was speaking to reporters after the launching of a 10-minute reading programme and the launching of the library at the Sabah Administrative Centre.
Present was Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation minister Datuk Yakub Khan.
Yakub added that the newly launched library showcased the Sabah government's aspiration in making the library as a destination for everyone.
"The ministry will also continue to support and be directly involved in the programmes implemented by the Sabah State Library.
"Moreover, it is towards realising the government's desire to create a knowledgeable society and a reading culture," he said.
The library was completed and handed over to the state Library on Dec 30, but due to the pandemic, it could only open officially today.
Apart from borrowing books, IT services and reading space, the library is also using a CLARE system to manage information digitally.
