Education Ministry will not tolerate rape jokes at school: Radzi

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will not tolerate issues like that of a teacher who allegedly made jokes about rape.

Senior Minister (Education) Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin said the ministry viewed the matter seriously.

"The ministry will not tolerate this issue which has already become a police case. At the same time, we are also conducting a through investigation.

"If there is a case on the incident, we will take the necessary action," he said today.

Recently, student Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, 17, made headlines after posting her experience at school lesson involving a male teacher who allegedly made a rape joke in the presence of both male and female students.

It was reported that following her claim, Ain Husniza had also received rape threats online.

Meanwhile, on the update of free laptops distribution for school students, Radzi said more than 13,000 laptops had been given out so far.

"The distribution process is going well and we will continue to give out the rest," he said.

Recently, the ministry announced that the Teaching and Learning from Home (PdPR) will be implemented for two weeks after the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday.

When tabling the Budget 2021 last November, Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced that government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLIC) would be contributing RM150 million into the Tabung CERDIK to provide laptops to 150,000 students from 500 schools.

In another development, Radzi called for the education-institution linked clusters under the ministry to be separated from the education clusters.

This, he said, was to give clear information to the public on education clusters.

"We have discussed this matter with the Health Ministry, and we are hoping to have it separated from the education clusters."

He said currently, education clusters comprised of clusters derived from schools, higher learning institutions, training institution and private education institution, among others, when only a small percentage of education institutions come under the ministry.
