BUTTERWORTH: The driver of a lorry carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks sustained second-degree burns when his vehicle caught fire at a factory in the Prai industrial area here this afternoon.
The Prai Fire and Rescue Department was alerted to the incident about 2.30pm.
Operations officer Mohd Sufian Hassan said the 50-year-old victim was given first aid treatment at the scene before being taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.
"As soon as we arrived at the scene, we found that the five-tonne lorry, carrying the LPG tanks, was engulfed in flames. The incident happened when the LPG tanks were being reloaded onto the lorry
"The lorry driver managed to be pulled to safety but sustained second-degree burns on several parts of his body. Firefighters worked hard to put out the fire as the factory was filled with LPG tanks," he said.
Sufian said the fire was brought under control within 10 minutes and was put out by 4.42pm.
A total of 32 firefighters were involved in the operation.
The cause of the incident and estimated losses are still being investigated.
