JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) stopped an attempt to bring in insect-infested dried coconuts on Tuesday.
Johor MAQIS director Hizzuan Hasim said the department detained 16 containers carrying the dried coconuts that were brought in from Papua New Guinea at the Pasir Gudang Port.
"Following a routine inspection on the containers, we found insects, believed to be 'necrobia rufipes', on the dried coconuts.
"We also found that the permit reference number did not match the phytosanitation certificate that was submitted," said Hizzuan.
He said the coconuts, weighing 225,000 kg and valued at RM778,500, were seized for further action.
"The case is being investigated under Section 14 of the Maqis Act 2011 for importing agricultural products that contain pests, disease or contaminants," said Hizzuan.
He reminded all importers and exporters to adhere to the regulations so that the disease control of animal, fish and plants as well as food safety standards are preserved.
