Narathiwat Islamic Council denies Kelantan politician got married online

KOTA BARU: The Narathiwat Islamic Council, in Thailand denied that a Malaysian politician with a 'Datuk' title had his marriage to his third wife solemnised (akad nikah) online.

Speaking to the New Straits Times, the council's vice-president Abdul Aziz Che Mamat said so far, the council has never approved online solemnisation to be used by imams in the Thai province.

"The Narathiwat Islamic Council has received unofficial report of a Malaysian politician who is from Kelantan who had tied knot with his partner also a Malaysian.

"We were told that the couple had used the services of an imam from Sungai Golok mosque and the conversation between the bride and the imam was held via video.

"I would like to stress here that the council has never allowed online solemnisation even though we are now facing movement control order and cross border travel is prohibited.

"We have also never issued the marriage certificate to the couple," he explained.

Therefore, Abdul Aziz said the council would investigate the matter thoroughly.

He added the imam involved in the akad nikah ceremony would also be called in for questioning.

It is learnt that the imam, in his 50s, has been attached to a mosque in Sungai Golok province for more than two years.

The marriage between the Kelantan politician who is also a deputy Minister with his bride was allegedly held on June 1 and had since gone viral on social media platforms.

Picture of the couple's marriage certificate as well as the conversation between the politician and the imam with two other men, believed to be witnesses, were also widely circulated.

The alleged bride from Selangor, was believed to be the third wife of the Member of Parliament.

Meanwhile, the politician in a short WhatsApp reply to the NST, merely said, "Doa aje lah ye (just pray for me)."
