MOH detects another 1,047 VOC cases nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has detected another 1,047 Variant of Concern (VOC) cases in the country.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the cases were identified through ongoing studies by the Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM-Unimas), UKM Medical Molecular Biology (UMBI-UKM), Integrative Pharmacogenomics Institute (iPromise-UiTM) and Malaysia Genome Institute (MGI).

IHCM-Unimas had identified 790 cases of the Delta variant (B.1.617.2), while another 113 cases of the Delta variant were detected by UMBI-UKM, followed by iPromise-UiTM (96 cases) and MGI (48 cases).

To date, said Dr Noor Hisham, cumulative cases categorised as VOC and Variant of Interest (VOI) stood at 3,692.

"Of the total, 3,672 of them were of VOC cases and 20 others were VOI cases.

"Overall, there were 3,432 Delta variant cases, 226 of Beta variant and 14 cases of Alpha variant," he said in a statement.

For VOI, 13 cases were of Theta variant; four Kappa and three Eta variant cases.
