Malaysia sees increase in Covid-19 cases second day in a row

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia continued to record an increase in daily Covid-19 cases after 6,517 new infections were reported to the Health Ministry as of noon today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the new cases brought the cumulative coronavirus total to 2,535,338 since the pandemic struck the country

It was reported that 6,323 fresh cases were reported to the ministry on Thursday.

Dr Noor Hisham, in a statement, said from the total new cases reported to his ministry as of noon today, 98.1 per cent or 6,392 cases comprises Category One and Category Two Covid-19 patients.

"A total of 125 cases or 1.9 per cent (of the total fresh cases reported to the ministry today) involved Category Three, Four and Five patients," he said.

He said 544 cases are being treated at Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of healthcare facilities nationwide.

From the total cases being treated currently in ICUs, he said 269 cases required ventilation.

Dr Noor Hisham also said the ministry reported 6,026 recoveries, bringing the cumulative total Covid-19 recoveries to date to 2,441,485 cases.

The ministry, he said, also detected nine new Covid-19 clusters in the country.

Details on daily Covid-19 data, he said, will be updated on the ministry's CovidNow portal at covidnow.moh.gov.my after midnight.
