Vehicle marshals not allowed to handle traffic control without police

KUALA LUMPUR: Vehicle marshals are prohibited from handling traffic control without the presence of police.

Federal police Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Mat Kasim Karim said the deployment of a marshal in any competition, convoy or programme must be under the presence of police.

"Road users do not necessarily have to follow to the instructions of a marshal, such as asking them to give way, to detour and others.

"Under the Police Act 1967 and the Road Transport Act 1987, only policemen, Road Transport Department officers and local governments' traffic wardens are given the authority to control traffic on public roads," he said when contacted today.

Mat Kasim said action could be taken against individuals or groups who control traffic to stop or request vehicles to detour along public roads without police presence.

On Tuesday, police arrested two men who acted as marshals for a superbike convoy.

The men, aged 26 and 27, an assistant at a legal firm and a factory supervisor, are believed to have interrupted public vehicles at the Sua Betong traffic light in Port Dickson.

Their actions were recorded in a one-minute video which has gone viral since Nov 20.
